What gear do skaters need?
When it comes to skating, gear can make all the difference when it comes to skill progression and safety. All skaters must have:
Recommended Brands:
Skates: Antik, Bont, Chaya, Riedell
Mouth Guard: SISU
Pads: Killer 187, Triple 8
Helmet: Triple 8, S1, or a hockey helmet
A Few Tips:
- QUAD skates with adjustable trucks and adjustable, non-marking toe stops. Ideally the skate boot should be flat (not heeled) and the toe stops should adjust with an allen wrench/hex key.
- Mouth Guard, molded to fit snugly against all top teeth
- Elbow Pads, Wrist Guards, Knee Pads
- Helmet, with hard outer shell

Helmet: Triple 8, S1, or a hockey helmet
A Few Tips:
- If you're on a budget: spend the most money on skates and a helmet, everything else can be upgraded later.
- The thicker the knee pad, the thicker the protection between your skater's knees and the ground.
- Toe guards/Toe covers are optional, but helpful in prolonging the life of skates.
- Non-Marking Toe Stops: any non-black toe stop.
- Measure Your Skater's Feet: skate size =/= shoe size. Measure your skater's foot in inches and cm and compare that measurement to the sizing chart for whatever skate you are considering.
- Questions? You're in luck, our coaches are gear heads! Feel free to text or email specific questions:

What is Roller Derby?
Roller derby is a full contact sport played on either a flat track or a banked (angled) track. KCRW Juniors is a member of the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA) and follows JRDA rules and regulations unless otherwise noted.
The Basics
Bouts = Games with 30-minute halves made up of jams
Jams = units of play lasting no longer than 2 minutes during which players can score points
The Players
Jammers: wear stars, attempt to earn Lead status, score points for every blocker they pass
Pivots: wears a stripe, can become the Jammer, otherwise they act like a normal blocker
Blockers: does their best to individually and collaboratively stop the opposing Jammer from scoring
The Levels
Junior Derby is played at 3 levels, detemined by skater skill-level and ability to take a hit.
Level 1: Positional blocking only, no forceful contact allowed
Level 2: Initial contact must be made gently, light force/pushing allowed
Level 3: Full contact

JRDA Rules + Regulations
JRDA stands for Junior Roller Derby Association. KCRW Junior Warriors registered as an Open Gender, Recreational League for the 2022-2023 competition year. We will not compete for rankings, but may travel and engage in unsanctioned play.
JRDA provides a rules set, national policies and procedures, and the chance for international play. All JRDA affiliated leagues require that coaches and regular volunteers attend Concussion and Safe Sport Trainings and pass a background check.
